WEEK 1 | WEEK 2 | WEEK 3 | WEEK 4 | WEEK 5/6 |
We are nearing the finish line and man on man week 7 was a big one. Since the bridge was back in place we were able to finally start getting everything placed on the beach. We built the beach hut and then I had the crazy idea that we needed a floating bar on the beach, so I spent the weekend figuring out how to make that happen.
With only one week left it is crunch time and I am so happy with the progress we made this week, it will set us up to hopefully get everything finished up for the big reveal.
What we had planned for the week:
Put the beach hut on the beachLight refreshBuild a barBegin landscaping on the beachPaint the chairsGet dirty
This is the first week of this One Room Challenge that I have actually completed everything I set out to and then some and I am hoping that week 8 is the same.
The Hut
The beach hut was built in two panels, I built it this way for two reasons. One I couldn’t easily get everything down to the beach o build it being we didn’t have a bridge and two we need to be able to take the structures down during the winter due to flooding that often happens. Our creek turns into a raging river 2-3 times a year.
So Glenn helped me transport the two panels down to the beach and we put the hut together. We only dropped it once which was scary, but thankfully nothing was damaged during the fall.
Once we got the hut up we were able to get the solar lights hung between the trees and the hut. Speaking of lighting I also dug out a set of old rattan lights that I have been saving for the past couple of years and gave them a little solar refresh. I took the shades and painted them white then inserted solar lights inside making them the perfect beach accessory. You can find the solar light kit here.
The Chairs
A couple of weeks after building the Adirondack chairs I was finally able to get them painted. If you are interested in making your own chairs you can find the tutorial I put together for them here.
After going through so many great options I chose the color Sienna Clay by Benjamin Moore and I am IN LOVE.
A Floating Bar
Last but not least this week, I made a floating bar. Yes, you read that correctly. Once we got the Hut in place I knew space was missing something and knew we needed a bar, I mean its a beach! But I didn’t want to just build a bar that we hade to move around and that was like other bars I have built in the past. The Hut is built off of a cedar tree and an oak tree that are near the water. The cedar tree is amazing and I realized would make the perfect bar for the beach.
So on Saturday morning, I set out with a plan and that plan was simply to end the day with a bar. I made much of it up as I went, so sorry no tutorial, but I could not be happier with how it turned out, and the best part is that it is the one thing that we should not have to worry about during the winter (fingers crossed.)
Side note, if you check out my insta stories you can see how exhausted I was by the end of the day. Not so much from building the bar, but going into a project like this without a set plan, I had to make MANY MANY trips back and forth from the beach up to my house where the saw and electricity were to make each and every cut and so all the sanding, but I have to say it was a great workout and I look forwards to many glasses of wine as my reward around this bar.
That is, we are headed into week 8 and the final week of this season One room Challenge, and even before I am done I am so grateful for an event like this and the friends I have made along the way. I love how Better Home and Garden and the ORC really bring together people in a time when we really need something like this.
