One Room Challenge- Week 2: Let’s build a desk

WEEK 1

Ok I have to start off with I had the best news last week when my company gave my team the entire week off as a refresh week, we have been working like crazy since COVID hit and I was so grateful to have this time to “relax.” Except… my idea of relaxing is 7 straight days of being able to build and create! Yes, I could have taken the week off to lounge and read a book, but for me the perfect way to reset is to have a week to get some of these crazy ideas out of my head.

I recently had my sister read my human design, and it turns out I am a Generator (obviously) but the crazy thing is that as she went through all of my channels it helped me understand so much about myself, including why spending a week of working on projects in my house really is the best thing for my body, soul, and mind. Well… maybe let’s talk about the body part next week when I have spent a full 7 days lifting, bending, and all that.

“Do the things that you most enjoy to recharge your generator energy”

So for week two of this One Room Challenge I hit the ground running with the plan to get the built-in desk built, you can catch up or over on my Instagram account.

This is what we had planned for the week:

  • Build the desk frame
  • Lay down the last few boards of underlay
  • Order all of the final material (almost there)
  • Pick paint colors (I bought about a gazillion samples)

The desk was my primary this week and I am happy to say I got 90% there! With the remainder of this week off I will be able to get it finished and start working on the cabinets fo the entry areas.

What We Did This Week

Build a desk

This was not a small task, I mean I literally laid in bed thinking of all the ways to build this desk for the past two weeks, and really it came down to pulling out my painter’s tape and laying this bad boy out.

Its one thing to lay it out in your head, but seeing it in the right dimensions allowed me to really make sure I was on track. I am no expert in CAD programs or designing the space online (working on it) so I went straight to the source. Once I had a plan I leadped in head first.

The entire desk is made from 3/4″ pine plywood. I went back and forth between the pine and birch but ultimately the price tag of the pine won me over, especially since everything is getting painted.

I have to say my favorite part about this project was getting to pull out the birthday present that Glenn and the girls got me, my new Kreg Jig! Seriously I have been wanting one of these for months and this is the ultimate project to use it on. By the way, it is 100% normal for my husband to buy me tools and gift, last Christmas I received a new table saw and I can guarantee tools will be on my Christmas list this year too!

All in all, I got the desk put together, and would be happy to do a walkthrough if anyone is interested. Tomorrow I will be working on the doors and trim and then will begin building the other cabinets for the entry.
