I have been wanting to participate in the One Room Challenge since the day we received the keys to our house, but timing and my need to spontaneously get projects done have kept me from participating, but not this time. That being said I had a completely different spaced planned to share which I was very excited about (hint: it was my kitchen) HOWEVER sometimes the project chooses itself, and that is very much the case this time.
The Project
But what project could possibly choose itself you ask? Well that my friend is the part of our property that the moment I saw it sold me on this house before I ever saw the house. We have a 5.6-acre property with a year-round creek that runs through it, and in order to access the house, you have to cross over a big wooden bridge. I knew the first time I drove over that bridge and crossed the creek that it would not and could not be the last.
The property is what sold us 100% and we knew that along with the house that there would be a lot to be done throughout. We had hoped that we would get a few more years out of the bridge, however in the past couple of months we have noticed some significant deterioration, and when you have a space that is not only the first thing that visitors see but also the only access point to everything, it tends to take priority. While I am not super excited I am putting the kitchen on hold for a tiny bit longer, I am actually very excited about this project because we spend a ton of time down at the creek.
Now don’t worry this is not just going to be a boring bridge makeover, the bridge is the epicenter of our summer hangout space, we hang hammocks beneath it and have plans for a beach beside it. So I hope you are in for a fun outdoor space project over the next 8 weeks!
The Plan
Like I said this will not just be a bridge facelift over the next 8 weeks, although that alone is a big enough undertaking. I have a few more plans up my sleeve. Our family spends a majority of our time during the summer down by the water, whether it’s swimming, sitting by the fire pit or our annual Camp Out Cookout which sadly looks like it will be cancelled this year due to COVID-19.
So along with redoing the entire top half of the bridge with a new modern look, we will be adding a new beach area creekside and making the most out of our favorite summer hangout space.
A guest may or may not have taken off one of the bridge side-rails while leaving. No names will be named 😉
The Checklist
- Demo the entire top part of the bridge
- Create a walking bridge to use during the rebuild
- Rebuild the top prat of the bridge
- Clear a new beach area along the creek and create access
- Build new creekside furniture
- Reuse the old beams for a fun project 😉
- Lay a new driveway and create a welcoming entrance to the house

Oh my gosh, you got this far and didn’t know what the One Room Challenge is?!
It is a challenge sponsored by Better Home & Garden bi-annually along with many other amazing sponsors. There are 20 featured designers who are chosen and other designers, creators, and DIYers like myself are able to participate in the challenge to share our process and motivate one another. If you would like to learn more about the challenge check it out here.
Ok well that is this for this week, but I cant wait to share where we are at next week!
Here is a little picture of the girls enjoying the creek from last year.
