One Room Challenge- Week 1: The room with no purpose

I can’t believe its that time again, but here we are. If you missed the Spring One Room Challenge you can see the beach adventure here. I would have never thought that time would go by so fast in the middle of a pandemic, it feels like a month ago we were finishing up the Spring One Room Challenge but I have to say a distraction is welcome right now. This time I will be taking on a project in our house that is much needed, this space is the first room you see as you enter the home, and not only does it lack design, it lacks purpose altogether. It is our living room, and besides walking through it to enter the bedrooms there is not much else that happens in this room.

The Project

So lets talk about this space, not only is it the first room you enter in our house but it is really the heart of the house. It is connected to our kitchen is the gateway to our bedrooms, and with that massive fireplace, it really should be a showstopper. That being said I have also struggled with this room since day one, it is a high traffic space and the layout of it does not leave a ton of room for furniture. To be honest I would have loved to have seen how others positioned furniture in here in the past.

The one thing this room has going for it is the massive one of a kind fireplace. This beauty takes up nearly 40sq ft of the footprint of the room and you can tell that someone put a ton of heart into her. I fell that with a few tweaks she can really be a showstopper.

The Plan

The number one thing this room needs is a purpose and I plan to give it one, or two 😉

Besides giving the fireplace a new look, I will be adding a built in desk and storage into this space. We only have 3 bedrooms in this house and eventually we are going to need the 3rd bedroom when the girls no longer want to share a room. So I will be adding a double desk area for the girls and I to utilize for many years to come (long after this crazy school at home time.)

Also because this is our entryway, I need to add some storage and do a few built-in on either side of the door. One side will be used to store gloves, umbrellas, and other misc items. On the other side, I will be doing a built-in animal center. A place to hide the litter box and a dog food station. When you live on a farm there is animal stuff everywhere, but it doesn’t mean that your house has to look like they own it.

We REALLY and I mean REALLY need a new front door, but I am not sure that will happen in this 6-week time frame, so my goal is to complete everything in this room but the new door. When that time comes it will be a dream come true, the problem is it has to be a custom door which means $$$

I am really looking forward to this project and I am excited to share it with you over the next 6 weeks!

The Checklist

  • Tile the fireplace
  • Add new shelves to the fireplace
  • Built-in desk
  • Built-in cabinets and benches by the entryway
  • New flooring
  • Install sliding door

But first… DEMO

Quinn was the MVP of the demo crew, that’s for sure!
