One Room Challenge- Week 5: Mission complete the cabinets

WEEK 1 WEEK 2 WEEK 3 WEEK 4

Here we are a week before the “end” of this 6-week challenge and I am so far from done it’s not even funny, but that is ok and I am going to tell you why. This is my second One Room Challenge which is typically a time frame of 6 weeks when designers and DIYers from all over come together to do one space together and cheer each other on. It is a great way to connect with creative individuals and push yourself to finish anything from a small space to a huge space over the course of 6 weeks.

Last Spring I participated in the challenge and did our bridge and beach area, it was a huge undertaking but did not require nearly the level of detail that this living room is. I was thrilled this week when ORC said that they were extending the final post deadline to 11/

This is what we had planned for the week:

  • Finish up the cabinet doors and hang them
  • Finish final trim
  • Add a shelf to the first slat wall
  • Finish second slat wall
  • Sand shelves and mantel wood
  • Sand vintage door

What We Did This Week

Finish the cabinets doors and trim

This week was all about the tedious details of the desk and two cabinets. I finished building all of the doors, sanding them down, adding the cane, and hanging them. Once I had them all hung I went through and added the final trim pieces. Of course I still have some touch up paint to do, but thats too be expected at this point in the project.

When I first started planning this room I thought I was probably getting in way over my head when it came to the buildout of the desk and cabinets in this space, but I have to say there have been multiple points of time during this project where I surprise myself. I have to credit my tools quite a bit for this one. More specifically I have to credit the various Kreg jigs I have been using. Without them, this build would look nothing like it does.

Lets talk about the Kreg

Kreg is not just a friendly neighbor that I had come to do this build. I have been wanting to get a Kreg pocket hole jig for some time and thankfully Glenn and the girls surprised me with one for my birthday. The pocket hole jig is how I was able to build professional looking cabinets literally all by myself! I knew I was going to need help when it came to the hardware portion of this build and could not be happier when the Kreg team said let’s work together on this.

They sent me their hardware installation set which includes a hinge jig, a drawer slide jig, and a cabinet pull jig. These three tools are essential for anyone putting together any type of cabinets and need a little help with the finishing touches.

Now you can get each of these jigs individually but right now you can get the full set of 3 and save $$$$ also this would be the perfect Christmas gift for the DIY’er in your life.

Here are links to my favorite Kreg tools which you can get at special pricing right now.

Sand until my finger tingle

The other big project I worked on this week and have honestly been putting off is sanding. I have a ton of sanding to do including the vintage door I will be hanging next week and multiple pieces of live edge pine that will be used to make the new fireplace mantels and open shelving above the desk. I woke up this morning with sore shoulder, but the wood is looking amazing and I will be picking some stain colors this week.

You will not see a reveal next week

Yes, you heard me correctly, while many of the participants will begin sharing their reveals, I will be using all of the extra time I can get to finish this space and will likely reveal at the very end. That being said I will continue to update on Instagram as well as through a few special blog posts I will be putting together.

Here is what I still have left to do

  • Tile the fireplace
  • Add new mantels to the fireplace
  • Finish open shelving
  • Finish second slat wall
  • Decorate

Who thinks I can get this done in the next couple of weeks?

Other participants

Want to see what other participants are up to and how their spaces are coming along, make sure to check out the week 3 post on One Room Challenge. This is such a great bi-annual event put on and sponsored by Better Home and Gardens one of my all-time favorite publications.
